Located in the historic centre of Besançon, the Place du Marché has always been the city's beating heart. The first market building in the 16th century, now a conservatory of music; a second one in the 18th century, today the museum; and a Baltard structure, now dismantled, are all part of its history.
To modernise the uses of the space and introduce the function of urban leisure, the program called for a new covered market and a multiplex.

The architectural project needed to blend with the existing stone façades by Chailluz, vestiges of a former block, now demolished.
It proposed a building resulting from the interlocking of two volumes forming right angles, with two stone façades on one side and two glass façades on the other. The market is located on the ground floor and the multiplex on the first floor; the place needed visibility and an address. The Rue Pâris, which separates the rear façade of the museum and the complex’s glass one, has become a covered passage consisting of a 7-meter cantilevered glass roof coordinated with the cornice of the museum.
