The architectural project aims to preserve the spirit of the original metal construction conceived by Edouard Albert. It is an innovative dialogue between restructuring, history, heritage and a contemporary approach.

The architecture of the second half of the century in Paris, in particular metal structures, becomes a challenge to renovate and preserve while applying today’s performance, standards, use patterns, programmes, innovations, and diversity.
While the original project was for a university, its reoccupation by the laboratories, libraries, amphitheatres, classrooms, and offices of the Pierre and Marie Curie University required a reinvention of the approach to deal with the inherited structures and spaces.
Its interface with the urban space was reinvented; the system of access via the streets, paths and an active pedestal are among the innovations prompted by the new project.

With the project, we succeeded in projecting into the 21st century in terms of facilities and performance. However, the symbolism and the original aesthetic of the place have been preserved so as to anchor it in the heritage of Paris. Today we are convinced, as for the Citroën car park, that the evocativeness, the aesthetic, and the architecture of this place can be preserved while radically changing its function: the space is a given, and the architectural programme is a variable. But always, the heritage remains the factor that federates identity and the “common good”.
